EDITORIAL by Ling Chui Sieng, Form 5A
With the First Anniversary of Merdeka on 31st August, Malaya has advanced into its second year of Independence. Much can be written in praise of its achievements in Retrospection, and the most noteworthy one is, in my opinion, in the field of education. Not only is the study of the National Language encouraged, but sufficient emphasis is also laid on vernacular language and English. Compulsory free education is still too untimely to be enforced, yet it can justifiably be said that elementary education no more a monopoly of the rich and the well-to-do, but within reach of all Malayans – indeed, it is the ideal of the Alliance Government to let education permeate through all social strata. Thus, adult and evening classes have come up like spring sprouts as more people come to realise the importance of education.
